Failsafing / Idiot Proofing

You've heard of the quote "What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?" The problem with that quote is that as a realist/pragmatist people know that they can fail, but what if your goal was to fail? This is kind of like what FAILSAFING/IDIOT PROOFING is.

To put systems in place to prevent you from not achieving your goal or from self sabotaging. I'm this type of person and this is why I've implemented several processes to keep me from self sabotage.

I will just list some items to give you an idea.

1. Intermittent fasting - Keeps me from eating too much since I'm an expert snacker. Usually in my daily routine since I work form home I would just go to the refrigerator and eat every time I pass it, for no particular reason at all, but just for the sake of eating.

2. Sliding Scale - During my fast depending on what social function is going on I will shift my eating scale to accommodate the time frame. Why fight all the food that you encounter, why not just eat when the food is available especially at a party?!

3. Shifting Time Length - If I know that I will eat really really bad, I just cut my eating time an hour or two. If I am eating really really healthy, I will extend my eating hours.

4. Eating Mandatory Items First - The idea behind this protocol is to trick the brain. Psychologically you are telling your brain you can eat anything and everything and as much as you want, but physically that is impossible. There are two things that occur.

  • First when you eat the "Mandatory Healthy Items" first it allows you to consume it easier. When you are very hungry everything tastes better even items that you would normally not consider.

  • Second When you eat the mandatory items it restricts the physical limitation of eating unhealthy items. It's a matter of minimizing the proportions of your unhealthy eating. By applying it this way you do it with a seamless effort.

These are just some of the practices I use, I am sure there are others you can think of like buying the right items, or being in the right place, etc...but FAILSAFING/IDIOT PROOFING is something that we should always put in practice. Putting barriers in place to insure success is just one way we can stack something to ensure a more likely  percentage of success.
